Lameness Investigations

LAMENESS INVESTIGATIONS

Lameness issues can range from the subtle poor performance when ridden to non-weightbearing sudden onset due to abscess, fracture or tendon injury. Allocating sufficient time to assess the horse on hard and soft surfaces as well as under saddle is especially important in the more subtle cases and you can rest assured that we will never rush cases. Full limb palpation, flexion tests, nerve and joint blocks can be performed and further diagnostics such as x-rays and ultrasonography are available if necessary.

Additionally, we carry all necessary bandaging to support injured tendons or to stabilise fractures for transport to hospital. We also endeavour to work with your farrier, physio or chiropractor so give a well-rounded approach and optimise outcome.

Foot abscess? No problem - sharp hoof knives, poulticing materials and a wealth of experience with hooves means that this can quickly be dealt with. We don't charge extra to remove the shoe - it's all part of the job!

Poor Performance

Ample time will be given for subtle cases so that your horse or pony can be seen on a range or surfaces, both on the lunge and under saddle if necessary. Careful detailed palpation of the limb(s) and a range of diagnostic tests including nerve and joints blocks are available to us before moving on to further diagnostics. Referral for bone scan can be arranged to better direct investigations where multiple areas are problematic and we can also offer a full range of systemic treatments including PSGAGs and supplements.

Severe Lameness and Hoof Care

Emergency rapid response to severe, non-weightbearing lameness. Fully equipped with bandaging and support materials. Excellent aftercare with advice constantly accessible.
We work with your farrier to optimise hoof balance and have full knowledge of modern materials and shoeing techniques to enable an informed discussion to take place.

Osteoarthritis, Back and Neck Issues

From kissing spines to muscular stiffness, we will work as part of a team with your physiotherapist or chiropractor to get the best solution. Often, chronic lameness will result in tightening of muscles in the back and neck so we always look at these areas and will refer you as appropriate once we have dealt with the underlying cause. Intra-articular steroid medications may be appropriate in ongoing osteoarthritis cases.
